What to look for in your new carpet, budget is key the old saying you get what you pay for is true, it can be a minefield but there is an easy way to navigate the huge range of fibres, construction and style. When you start to think about buying new carpet why not book a free home consultancy when we will guide you through the facts and give you a free no obligation quotation

Lets look at practicalities first, its no good selecting a long pile carpet in a busy thoroughfare that is unless you are looking to pay upwards of £55m2– you don’t need to compromise design either as there are some cracking low level pile and loop carpets that are self-patterned, striped or even perfectly plain. Here we are talking about the hallway, stairs and landing along with rooms that have multi access points. You can choose from low level loop or twist pile and even velvet pile but here you need to up the budget to buy something suitable and to have a lasting appearance.

Bedrooms you can treat yourself to the longer pile carpets for that luxury feel, remember if you do want the longer the pile carpet in heavy wear areas then the higher density of pile the better equipped for wear it will be.

That’s it then cracked it I hear you say, well hold your horses there is the fibre to consider, do you go for wool, polypropylene, Polyester, Natural fibre or Polyamide (Nylon), what’s the difference is the next question, well crudely cost is the answer.

POLYESTER

POLYPROPYLENE

WOOL

NYLON

NATURAL

Starting with Polyester which is certainly not at the budget end of the market, people tend to like the soft feel and lustre that it gives it is a strong yarn and manufactures confidence is shown by the long wear guarantees given, however when it comes to longevity in appearance that is where it fails as it tends to crush quicker and mats together, whilst it has good stain resistance and an attractive price bracket its long term-appearance is questionable.

Polypropylene is virtually stain free these days and most guarantee that and makes a very popular choice without breaking the bank, easy clean and scores well above the previous with appearance.

Wool has been people’s choice for many years and rightly so, it was always the easier to clean fibre. But a word of caution there are many grades of wool including re-dyed wool which is not the quality of pure new wool so buyer beware.  Wool’s appearance lasts and rates highly against wear but there is a word of caution, although wool carpets are moth proofed they are not moth proof and this is worth reading up.

Nylon, was the fibre that sparked and sounded like cotton wool years ago but how far it come, strong, colourful and depending on the application soft as you would like or tuff in commercial locations, but also easy to clean and maintain with excellent long term appearance and wear capabilities, you can pay more than wool when selecting like for like but a great investment.

Natural carpet such as sisal and Jute are some designers dream although not always the hardest wearing as they are made from grasses natural . The carpet needs to be ‘double stuck’ meaning the underlay must be suitable for this method it is then stuck to the sub floor with a release adhesive then the carpet is stuck to the underlay with a permanent bond and rough cut to sit up the wall all the way around the room and left overnight to dry and allow for shrinkage. The carpet fitting is completed the following day, this all comes at a cost.
